After arriving in Maryland, Harden went to Surrattsville High School in Clinton. In the fall of 1980, she enrolled at the University of Texas at Austin. She earned a bachelor's degree in theatre that year. Harden was admitted to NYU's Tisch School of the Arts in 1988 in order to receive her MFA.
